WEIGHT PROBLEMS I HAVE A THOROUGHBRED EVENT HORSE WHO IS REALLY HARD TO KEEP WEIGHT ON WITHOUT HER GETTING HYPER. ARE THERE ANY FEED SUPPLEMENTS THAT CAN HELP? Is she chestnut??!! No, seriously, this is an extremely common problem. The first thing I would recommend is adding a product with good quality enzymes in it. Jim Lewis Agri-Nutrition has one called Equine-O-Zyme - a high-quality enzyme supplement which really helps a horse get more from whatever you feed. Herbs for Horses also makes several that are excellent. This is the one type of supplement I whole-heartedly believe in, and all our horses are on it 365 days a year. Secondly, make sure the grain she gets is not higher than 12% protein, a low- protein complete feed, such as Purina Horse Chow Checkers contains around 25% roughage and can be a good solution. Give her as much good quality grass hay as she will eat - a Thoroughbred in regular work is not likely to eat too much hay, and the constant munching can calm a horse down. Good quality alfalfa cubes worked wonders with one of my eventers, and some horses are happier (especially if they have been on the track), with a haynet hung where they can watch whats going on - try it. Corn Oil added to the diet supplies calories without making a horse "hot"; Vitamin B1 (Thiamine) is said to calm some horses as well. Last, but not least, lots of turnout with good grazing helps put on weight and is relaxing for 99% of horses. *****
