PARTS OF THE BRIDLE

HUNTER BRIDLES

Hunter bridles are intended to be simple and elegant and to show off a beautiful horse's head.

These bridles normally feature a plain raised or fancy-stitched browband and cavesson noseband, and laced reins. Often the noseband and browband are padded with soft leather. They are most often used with a variety of snaffle or pelham bits (using two sets of reins).

Accessories most often seen in the show ring are a Hunting Breastplate and/or Standing Martingale

DRESSAGE BRIDLES

Dressage bridles are usually wider than hunter bridles to suit the larger heads of warmblood horses favored in dressage. Nosebands are normally quite wide and well-padded so they can be fastened quite firmly and remain comfortable.

Snaffle bridles normally feature a wide, padded flash noseband; double bridles must have a cavesson noseband only. Nosebands are often a 'crank' style, browbands may be feature brass or silver decoration, and  reins are usually laced or continental leather or web.

No martingales are allowed in competition, and breastplates, while allowed, are rarely seen outside of Eventing dressage.

JUMPER & EVENT BRIDLES

Bridles for Jumpers and Event horses, (along with the chosen bits) are designed for maximum control when galloping, jumping, and turning at speed.

Snaffles and pelhams, gags and hackamore (bitless) bridles are all commonly seen. The noseband is usually a figure 8 or flash, and the reins are normally rubber to provide the rider with non-slip grip.

Most horses wear a breastplate to prevent the saddle from slipping, many with a running martingale.
