A breastgirth is a simple strap that fastens to either side of the saddle around the horse's neck at the chest. It is usually made of elastic, and most commonly seen in the Jumper ring.

Running martingales are designed to put downward pressure on the horse's mouth to encourage him to lower his head when the rider has tension on the reins.

Running martingales should never be used without Rein Stops on the reins to prevent the martingale rings from getting caught on the bit.

Standing martingales are attached to the noseband and simply prevent the horse from raising his head beyond a certain point.
